Group News - November 2000

Contacts:

Claude Matthews in Canada contacted us about his research of his mother's side of the family. Maude Agnes SEAGO was the sister of Brian SEAGO , the father of Edward B. SEAGO (the artist).  Claude was able to tell us that Edward's brother John W SEAGO  who lived in Kenya (now Zimbabwe) and appeared in some films/programmes about wild animals.  Claude also asked us if we were able to help with identifying the grave of his brother, Lionel Wollaston Matthews, who died in the UK during World War II.  Lionel died aged 23 years, serving with the Royal Canadian Airforce.     We send Claude all the info we had about the 'SH' family tree and we were able to give him the address/URL of the Commonwealth Graves Commission web site, that records the details of his brother's loss.

Tim Randles e-mailed us about the SAGO's of Halesworth, Suffolk. His grandfather was Arthur Henry SAGO b. 1886 (SK79).  Arthur married in 1909 and had six daughters.  We have since been exchanging information, which fills in some gaps in the our indexes. We also gave Tim the e-mail address of Stella Harry, who has done most of the research on the Halesworth SAGO's.

Catriona in Scotland has been exchanging e-mails with the Group, about her grandmother's side of the family. Her grandmother was Mabel Lillian who married SEAGO, born 1891 in Norwich.  Mabel had four bothers and sisters. Catriona is having some trouble delving back as details of Mabel's father and grandfather are sketchy. For some reason, the PRO BMD do not list all the events as one might expect. Some certificates will be ordered to provide some more definite leads.

NEWS: Mike Higgins and Susan spent a week in south-east Norfolk at Haddiscoe during the school's half term (the last week of October).   Despite the rain and wind, they visited many of the local villages and towns deep in SEAGO country.  A little time was spent looking at gravestones in local church yards - its funny what some people do on holiday!. Mike spent a couple of half days doing some research at the Norfolk Family History Society's  super new library building in the St Giles area of Norwich (see link to NFHS on the Group's 'Links' web page), and at the Norfolk Record Office at Anglia Square, Norwich.  These visits turned up quite a few new references to SEAGO's which have been added to the Group's Indexes and the 'Miscellaneous' web page.

Ron Seago (I.O.W.) and Mike Higgins have been swapping information on Barry SEAGO's family tree, the members of which have been living in Scotland for 100 years..

Alan Smith, one of our tireless Group members living in Canada, visited the UK during October and we await any news he might have of his trip.

Some new additions have been added to the Group's SEAGO Indexes and some entries tidied-up.  We now have over 5,800 entries!   A small London SEAGO family tree (formerly 'LA') has been connected to a Norfolk based family tree (now 'SP').

Group News - September 2000

The Somme:  Mike Higgins and his wife Sue visited France for their holiday this year, during August. While touring, we took the opportunity to visit the Somme area and visited some of the military cemeteries and 'looked-up' some of the Seago's who fell during the First World War. We knew there were many cemeteries cared for by the Commonwealth Graves Commission, but did not realise just how many graveyards and memorials there are.  Visiting some of the cemeteries with their hundreds of gravestones laid out row upon row and reading many of the inscriptions was a poignant and sad experience, lightened only by the fact that the memory of the fallen was so carefully and thoughtfully preserved. One certainly left with the feeling that war is a futile waste of time, effort and life.

At the Poziers Memorial we saw inscribed the name of my great uncle - W F Seago (William Frank - YA50), who died on 21st March 1918, aged only 23 years old. He had only married eighteen months earlier in 1916, and therefore his wife Maud was left a young widow.

In the Grove Town Cemetery at Meaulte, stands the headstone memorial for Sidney Albert Seago, a rifleman in the 12th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade.  He died on 20th January 1917, aged 27 years.

At the Doingt Communal Cemetery Extension, near Peronne, we found the headstone for George William Edward Seago.  He died of wounds, received the previous day, on Sunday 6th October 1918, aged 25 years.  George came from Lewisham in England and was a Lieutenant with the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry.

Lastly, we visited the Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, east of Peronne. Here was the grave of C G Seago, who died on Sunday 3rd November 1918.  We do not know his full names or his age from the CWGC information, but know he was a private in the 16th Battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry..

For further details and searches of the those that fell - go to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site at http//yard.ccta.gov.uk

The Group's SEAGO Indexes:  Alan Smith (Canada) has again added to the Group's Index with PRO marriages in the UK for the years 1941 to 1983.  Robin Branch and Ron Seago have checked through the PRO index's for deaths and found some omissions during the 1920's and 1930's -  Robin Branch has also given details of some marriage/birth certificates gathered in the pursuit of his researches. All of these have been added to the Group's Index.

The Group's Seago Index for UK events now is close on 5,700 entries!

Contacts: Ron Seago (Isle of Wight) has at last found his lost cousin, Colin Seago,  Ron, who has been following numerous leads (and is frequently disappointed), has now added further strands to his family tree and hopes to confirm details of other family members.  Ron says he 'feels better now that something positive is happening again'.

Alan Yolland contacted the Group to seek any assistance we could provided on a Victor Seago, a builder,  who lived in Fulham in the 1930's.   Any information would be gratefully received.

We have had a number of contacts from the USA asking for further details of John Sego who married Margaret Birmingham.  As a UK Seago Group we do not index all the USA Seago's', but we do have a site page giving ALL the information we hold about John Sego (see link from the Home page).  If any further information comes to light concerning the origins of this particular John Sego/Seago - we will give this prominence on our news page. As mentioned before in 'Group News' we await a volunteer in the USA to host an American WWW site for Seago researchers.

We have also had e-mails from a John Carsey and a Dennis Whittenbury, both of whom have a female descendant who married a Seago...... what info we had has been passed on.

Group News - July 2000

Recent Additions to the Group's Main Indexes

Alan Smith (in Canada) has done it again!...... providing over two hundred new UK PRO death index references covering the years 1939 to 1983.  These additions took the Group's main Index (records of written evidence /references to SEAGO's)   to over 5,000 entries..........  Thanks Alan.

Alan's wife has also been beavering away looking through microfilms of Scottish PRO indexes and has supplied many references to Scottish Seago's.

Mike Higgins has started to search for further 1891 census records recording Seago's.  Cross checking against 1881 census records, he hopes to find those individuals not yet found ten years later.  One off-spin from this, was finding that the Seago's listed as living in Cirencester, Gloucestershire in the 1881 census were incorrectly transcribed - they in-fact have the surname Teago!   Mike has also added some details of two more villainous Sago/Seagoe's who were transported to America in the 18th century - details on the Seago Miscellaneous Notes and Entries web page.

Contacts

Georgina Morat in Vanuatu (an island in the Pacific ocean) e-mailed us again this month with some further details of her great-grandfather, Ernest Goldfinch SEAGOE, who was born in 1886.  It appears Ernest came to the island around 1900 and married Daisy Roache in 1911 - they had two children Margaret (b.1912) and Geoffrey (b.1916). Both Ernest and Georgina's other great-grandfather Ernest Rason were prominent people on the island.  We await further information as Georgina researches her family.

David and Leta Seago, in the USA, contacted us and kindly sent details of their family tree which records details of nine generations of Seago's!!, starting with John Seago/Sego born about 1715 and married Margaret Birmingham in 1784 in St Luke parish, Queen Ann County, MA.  We were not able to provide evidence of John's immigration to the USA, but did send details of all the 'John's' we have recorded in the UK prior to 1800.  David's e-mail address is given on the 'Seago Links' page.    We have offered to follow-up any possible research avenues in the UK given the details known.

Ron Seago (Isle of Wight) reports he is recovering well after some engineering work to his knees - he will be able to more weeding in the garden soon.   Ron continues writing to current Seago's, following up leads and identifying family tree connections.

A Mark Seagoe sent an e-mail giving some info about the Irish parish of 'Seagoe'........ we await further contact.

Group News - May 2000

Recent Additions to the Group's Main Indexes

The number of entries in the Group's Main Index continues to grow - there are now over 4,870 entries for Seago events.

Contacts

Stella Harry  e-mailed a brief note, stating she has entered the 21st Century, by getting an e-mail address.  Stella's research interests are detailed on the 'Links' page, where her e-mail address is listed.

Georgina Seagoe-Morat sent us an e-mail, causing me to get out an atlas - Georgina reports that 'Seagoe's were very active in the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu, an ex-British and French condominium).'  She offers details of her family tree, which we await. Apparently, Seagoe's appear in a book that details the people that shaped the New Hebrides islands.Vanuata is midway between Australia and the Fiji Islands.   Sounds intriguing!

Alan Smith in Canada has returned from a holiday and has since sent details of micro-films of south-east Norfolk parish records he has searched.  His wife Sheila, has been searching Scottish records, following-up on the Scottish Seago's mentioned in last month's news.

Patricia Gyabronka contacted us in April with a query about a Sarah Anne Seago who married a George Thomas Hastings in 1846.  We were able to send her some details relating to the YE tree.  Further contact is awaited.

An interesting e-mail was received from a Linda Tebbutts in New Zealand, relating to the possible 'Spanish connection' (see the Origins web page). Linda is researching a SEAGAR family and they too have the anecdote about their ancestors being poor shipwrecked Spanish sailors from the Spanish Armada fleet. Although our Group does record some records for variants of the name SEAGO, we have few entries for variant names after 1850 (since surnames became more less variable and constant).  Anyway, our Group would be very interested to maintain links with those researching SEAGO variant names.

Vivian Egan, from Australia, contacted us about a WEGG ancestor who married a SEAGO. Vivian is considering setting up a family history group web page for her W*GG* one-name study.

Tony Hall contacted us about his grandfather's mother who was Maude Ethel Barrett, formerly SEAGO.  We were able to exchange some details of the SEAGO side, which I hope helped us both.

Recent Additions to the Group's Main Indexes

The number of entries in the Group's Main Index continues to grow - there are now over 4,870 entries for Seago events.

Contacts

Linda King (from Surrey) and John and Audrey Jefferson (from New Zealand) continue to keep in contact.  As reported in the last 'Group News', Linda and Audrey became aware of each other through contacting the Group for their Seago researches.  Both share a common Seago/Lloyd ancestry.  Audrey has found a new reference to a Frances Seago born in Aston Juxta, Birmingham in 1830 to parents Thomas and Frances Seago (LF tree).  Linda is planning a blanket search of the census records for the Shoreditch area in Middlesex/London for an entry for Thomas Seago, born about 1802.  ......... I wish Linda good luck!...as Shoreditch was a huge highly populated area.

Ron Seago (Isle of Wight) continues to maintain E-mail contact with Anita in the USA who is still pursuing any record of John Seago/Sego's (who married Margaret Birmingham) entry into the USA.  Ron has also been corresponding with the Lowestoft (Suffolk)
