RECORDED INFORMATION

The Indexes co-ordinator, Mike Higgins, maintains a collection of information about SEAGO's in the UK, shared freely by numerous Seago researchers over many years The index and data collected includes:

Although there are many records and information included in the collection, there remains much SEAGO research to be carried out. To maximise effort and prevent duplicate searches, you might like to enquire where research still needs to be carried out.

I welcome comments, donations of information and notification of corrections

THE SEAGO MAIN INDEX

The main Index is maintained on a computer database using Microsoft's Access programme. An entry or record is made for each occurrence of a piece of written evidence pertaining to a Seago (and some surname variants) in the UK. The index already has over 7,300 entries (August  2008). It has taken some time and experience to design a database suitable for indexing a wide variety of information sources for a one-name genealogy group. The Index has comprehensive sorting and query aids to make searching easier.

Extracts of the Index are freely available to researchers. These will be made available to anyone who requests details relevant to their researches, free of charge - usually provided as an e-mail attachments or as printed extracts. Index extracts can be provided in Microsoft's Access, Excel formats, or as RTF files.

The web site has some pages giving listings of some UK Seago births, deaths and marriages.

Remember that the collection's aim is to share information freely and assist other researchers. I consider it good manners for those requesting information or a copy of the Group's Indexes to reciprocate by sending copies or details of their researches about SEAGO's.

The Index structure

The main Index database is initially sorted by birth year and forename. Each entry in the Index database records data under the following fieldnames or headings:

Tree ..... A code is allocated to each individual where a family link is established. The code is two letters followed by two or three digits. The two letters identify a particular family tree or group, whilst the number identifies an individual belonging to that family group. Many Index entries may relate to an individual.  Lowercase Tree references are speculative or temporary.

Birth ..... The birth year of the individual. This is given, where known, drawn from birth certificates or extrapolated from census records or other records. The birth year recorded may occasionally be approximate, if definitive evidence is not available. This field is shown blank if no evidence suggests the individuals' birth year.

Entry..... A code is used to identify the type of record/event recorded. These are:

Variant ...... Records the variant surname given, if not Seago. Variants include Sego, Seggoe, Segar, Sago, Sagoe, Seagar, etc. (note: Seager is considered an established surname in its own right after the mid 19th century and is rarely recorded in our indexes after 1850).

Area ...... A code given for the area or county. LON = London, SFK = Suffolk, DUR = Durham, KEN = Kent, etc. (other English county codes use the UK abbreviations accepted), SCO = Scotland.  Overseas:  FRA=France,   AUST = Australia,  CAN = Canada, BELG = Belgium, etc.

For the county of Norfolk::   E = eastern coastal area, including Yarmouth, CEN = central area, west of Norwich,  NORW = Norwich, NE = north east of Norwich, ERP = North-eastern coastal area, S = southern part, SE = south-east of Norwich, to Burgh St Peter, W = western part.

District ....... records the parish, registration district or town that pertains to the record.

Qtr ...... gives the month or quarter pertaining to the event recorded; or the PRO piece number of a census reference.

Year ...... gives the year pertaining to the record or event.

Ref and Ref-n ...... gives the reference for the source of the information. For PRO births, marriage and death index entries the PRO reference is given, for census records the PRO reference (piece number and folio) is given. REG for parish register entries, ATs for Archdeacon Transcripts, BTs for Bishops Transcripts, TRAN for a written transcript of a register, VIT for Vital Record entry, etc. Sometimes gives a reference to the source; e.g: NRO = Norfolk Record Office, NFHS = Norfolk Family History Society, CWGC = Commonwealth War Graves Commission, IGI = International  Genealogy Index entry, SIND = Scottish birth/marriage/death indexes, etc.

Parents/notes ...... these give the parents names where known. The mothers maiden name is sometimes given in square brackets. Occasional notes are sometimes entered in lowercase text.

Spouse/notes ...... these give the spouse's name where known. Occasional notes are sometimes entered in lowercase text.

Death_age ...... The age at death given where relevant and known.

WARNING! - Although the I have tried to maintain the integrity of the indexes, I cannot be responsible for occasional errors or omissions. Researchers are advised to consult original sources to verify the details recorded. The index must not be seen to be complete, exhaustive or free from errors, as it is only a collation of records seen by many Seago researchers over a number of years.
